Mrs Joseph Goff
(1797-1874)
8 June 1861

Volume 4, page 44, sitting number 4248.

[The sitter is identified as ‘Mrs Goff’ in the Silvy daybooks. A pencilled inscription in a period hand on the back of the mount identifies her as ‘Aunt Goff / sister to Grannie Doyne.’ Charlotte Stunnus married Reverend Charles William Doyne; her sister Jane married Joseph Goff.]

Born in 1796 at Portarlington in Queen’s County, Ireland [today County Laois], Jane Stannus was the daughter of Captain Thomas Stannus, who was the Member of Parliament for Portarlington from 1789 to 1799.

In 1816 she married Joseph Goff of Hale Park in Hampshire, son of Joseph Fade Goff. Their marriage produced nine children.

The couple appear on the 1861 census living at Hale House in Hampshire. The household included eleven servants, among them a butler, a footman and a groom.

Mrs Jane Goff died on 3 June 1874, aged 79, at Hale House. She left an estate valued at £4000.

Her husband died at Hale House the following year leaving an estate valued at £350,000.

[Sitting number 4245 on the same day is ‘Miss Goff,’ presumably this sitter’s daughter.]
