Mrs Fairfax of Newton Kyme
(1812-1898)
10 July 1861

[The Silvy daybooks identify the sitter only as ‘Mrs Faifax’ but a pencilled inscription verso in a period hand reads ‘Mrs Faifax of Newton Kyme, April 1863.’]

Born at Lucknow in India on 16 September 1812, Louisa Constantia Ravenscroft was the daughter of George and Louisa Ravenscroft. She was baptised at Calcutta on 26 January 1813.

On 29 July 1836 at Trinity Church in Marylebone she married Thomas Fairfax. Their marriage produced six children.

The couple appear on the 1861 census living at Newton Kyme Hall in North Yorkshire with three daughters, two sons and and fourteen servants (including a butler, two footmen, a valet and a coachman). Thomas Fairfax gave ‘Landed Proprietor’ as his profession.

Mrs Louisa Constantia Fairfax died on 20 August 1898 at 11 Ovington Square in Knightsbridge, leaving an estate valued at £669.

[The following sitting in the daybooks is Miss Katherine Fairfax, one of Mrs Fairfax’s daughters.]
