Major-General Sir Alexander Tulloch

[The Silvy daybooks identify the sitter as 'Major-General Tulloch.' This is presumably Major-General Sir Alexander Murray Tulloch, the only Major-General Tulloch listed in Hart's Army List at the time this portrait was made.]

According to the Dictionary of National Biography, Tulloch 'was born in 1803 and he spent his entire career in the Army in which, most unusually for this period, he always evinced a great interest in the welfare of the soldiers under him. He was to attain his greatest fame as one of the two investigators, Sir John McNeill being the other one, who visited the Crimea and reported on the mismanagement of the campaign there. When he finally retired from the Army he had not only attained the rank of Major-General but had also been knighted.' [He was appointed KCB in 1857 and promoted to Major-General in 1859.]

He died without issue at Winchester on 16 May 1864 and was buried at Welton near Daventry in Northamptonshire.
