Miss Joyce Maddy
(1843-1921)

Born Harriet Joyce Maddy in 1843, her parents were Thomas Watkin Maddy and his wife Jane Maddy née Gwynne. Her father was an attorney and the clerk of the county court in Herefordshire. 

She was baptised at St Peter’s in Hereford on 2 February 1843. 

In 1851 she was living at Sutton St Nicholas in Herefordshire with her parents, her sister Mary Anne Frances Maddy and her brother Thomas Herbert Maddy. Her name was recorded at Harriet Joyce. By the time she visited Silvy’s studio in 1862 she was known by her middle name, Joyce. 

In 1871 she was living with her widowed mother in a house called ‘Dolaeron’ in Llanddewi Aberarth in Cardiganshire. The two women employed one housemaid to look after them. They were still at the same address in 1891. 

Joyce’s mother died at Dolaeron on 12 March 1894.

When the census was taken in 1911 Joyce Maddy was living with her unmarried older brother Thomas Herbert Maddy at at 51 Argyle Road in West Ealing, Middlesex. The household included a 37-year-old, unmarried niece and three servants. 

Joyce Harriet Maddy never married. She died, aged 78, on 10 September 1921 at 51 Argyle Road in West Ealing, Middlesex, leaving an estate valued at £5696. She was buried in Hanwell Cemetery.
