John Argles

John Agles appears on the 1861 census, aged 28, living at Ashford Road in Maidstone with his parents, Henry and Catherine Argles, and his four siblings. His father gave ‘Magistrate – Druggist’ as his profession. John was also a ‘Druggist.’

At Folkestone on 23 February 1862 John Argles, ‘chemist and druggist’ of Bank Street, Maidstone, married ‘Constance Jane, daughter of William Beale, Esq., solicitor, Maidstone’ (Morning Post, 25 September 1862).

The couple appear on the 1881 census living at 5 Bower Terrace in Maidstone with their two children, Constance and Leslie, and three servants.

John Agles died, aged 52, at Maidstone on 8 September 1884, leaving an estate valued at £6,777.

‘The death of Mr John Argles took place at his residence, at Maidstone, on Monday afternoon. The deceased gentleman, whose death was caused by paralysis and apoplexy combined, had been ailing for nearly twelve months, but his condition became more critical a few days ago’ (Folkestone Express, 13 September 1884).
