Major-General Philip Anstruther
(1807-1884)

Major-General Philip Anstruther, CB, died on 18 February 1884 at Pitcorthie House, Colinsburgh, Fife. 

An obituary appeared in the Dundee Evening Telegraph (19 February 1884). 'Major-General Philip Anstruther, C.B., of Thirdpart, died yesterday morning at Pitcorthie House, Colinsburgh, in the 77th year of his age. The deceased General was educated at Westminster School, and joining the Madras Artillery in 1824, he served in India and in the first China war, where he was made a prisioner, and suffered six months' captivity. He afterwards served on the staff of Lord Gough at the battles of Chillianwallah and Goojarat in 1849, and under Sir Harry Smith in the Kaffir war in 1851. On the death, in 1856, of his elder brother, Colonel Robert Anstruther, he returned to Scotland, and retired from the army in 1859.'
