A pencilled inscription verso in a period hand reads: 'm. 1869 Brother of late Lady Trimleston.' Given that Lady Trimleston only had one brother, Colonel John Philip Roche of the 2nd Life Guards, this ought to be his future wife. However, although Colonel Roche died indeed marry in 1869, his wife was called Agnes Jane Mugford, she was only born in 1846 and her father was a commercial agent in groceries.
