Born on 14 June 1820, Sholto James Douglas was the son of General Sir James Dawes Douglas and Marianne née Bullock.

On 17 May 1853 he married Ann Harriet Mills, daughter of William Mills. Their marriage produced three children.

Sholto James Douglas died, aged 47, on 10 June 1868 at Quatre Bornes on the island of Mauritius, where he had been Procurator-General and Advocate-General since 1853. He left an estate valued at £3000.
