(1825-1901)
18 June 1861

Volume 4, page 104, sitting number 4485.

[Identified in the Silvy daybooks as 'James L. Neper,' this is probably James Lenox Naper of Loughcrew near Oldcastle in County Meath, Ireland.]

Born on 5 December 1825, he was baptised on 11 April 1826 at Monks Kirby in Warwickshire. His parents were James Lenox William Naper and Selina née Skipwith.

On 5 April 1877 at Agher Church in County Meath he married the Honourable Catherine Frances Rowley, daughter of Clotworthy Wellington William Robert Rowley, 3rd Baron Langford of Summerhill, and his wife Louisa Augusta née Conolly.

He appears on the 1881 census, a widower living with two-year-old son William and James's unmarried sister Anna Selina Naper at 21 Chesham Street, Belgravia. For his profession he gave 'Magistrate & Dep[uty] Lieut Co Meath Ireland.' Ten years later James, William and Anna were living at 'Villa Franca' on Holly Walk in Leamington, Warwickshire. The household also comprised seven servants, including a valet, a butler and a footman.

James Lenox Naper died, aged 75, on 4 December 1901 at the Kildare Street Club in Dublin. He left an estate valued at £1507.

On 28 December 1901, under 'Agricultural Jottings' the Worcesteshire Chronicle lamented that 'Irish agriculture has lost a prominent breeder of Hereford cattle and Shropshire sheep in Mr James Lenox Naper, of Loughcrew, whose death was recently announced.'
