Lady Audrey Townshend

Born in or about 1845, Lady Audrey Jane Charlotte Townshend was the daughter of Rear-Admiral John Townshend, who succeeded his cousin as 4th Marquess Townshend in 1855.

Lady Audrey Townshend married firstly, on 18 September 1873, the Honourable Greville Theophilus Howard, second son of the 17th Earl of Suffolk. Her first husband died in 1880 and she married, secondly, on 10 August 1882, General the Right Honourable Sir Redvers Henry Buller, V.C.

Lady Audrey Townshend died on 20 February 1926 at the age of 81.

According to her obituary in the Times (22 February 1926), ‘Lady Audrey Jane Charlotte Buller, widow of General Sir Redvers Buller, V.C., died on Saturday at Coombe Edge, Windlesham. She was the youngest daughter of the fourth Marquess Townshend. She married, first, in 1873, the Hon. Greville Theophilus Howard, of Castle Rising, second son of Charles, Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire, and had two sons and two daughters. Mr. Howard died in 1880. Lady Audrey married Sir Redvers Buller in 1882, and he died in 1908, leaving an only daughter, now Dame Georgina Buller, D.B.E., R.R.C.

‘Lady Audrey was an invalid for many years, but she previously had taken a great deal of interest in the welfare of soldiers and their dependents, and was much beloved by the tenants and villagers on the Raynham, Castle Rising, and Downes estates. The funeral will take place at the Church of the Holy Cross, Crediton, on Wednesday at 2.30.’
