Miss Susan Hamond
(1833-1927)

Volume 1, page 46. sitting number 388.

[Identifed as Mrs William Birkbeck in the album compiled by her brother-in-law, Somerville Arthur Gurney, the Silvy daybooks give the sitter's name as Miss Hamond.]

Susan Maria Hamond, daughter of Anthony Hamond of Westacre in Norfolk, married William Birkbeck at St James's, Westminster, on 14 October 1862.

William's older half-brother had already married Susan's older sister Mary Ann Hamond in 1849.

The 1861 census shows William Birkbeck, a 28-year-old banker and widower, living with his 2-year-old son, William John Birkbeck, and six servants at Thorpe Grove, Thorpe, Norfolk. This was the child of his first marriage, which was to Elizabeth Margaret, second daughter of Albermarle Cator of Woodbastewick Hall in Norfolk. She had died on 2 March 1859.

Mr and Mrs Birkbeck appear on the 1871 census living at Thorpe Grove with their five-year-old daughter Susan Elizabeth Antonia Birkbeck.

Mrs Susan Maria Birkbeck died, aged 94, at Thorpe in Norfolk on 6 August 1927, leaving an estate valued at £26,258.

[From an album compiled by the prominent Quaker and banker Somerville Arthur Gurney.]
