Miss Hamond
(1831-1908)

Probably Volume 1, page 189, sitting number 960.

[Although a name, 'Miss Hamond,' appears for this sitting, no image was pasted into the daybooks.]

This is probably a sister of Mrs Katherine Gurney née Hamond and therefore a daugther of Anthony Hamond of Westacre, Norfolk. Usually, only the eldest unmarried daughter of a family was addressed as 'Miss' followed by only the family surname, without a forename or initial, so this is probably Frances Hamond (1821-1862). She did have an older sister, Mary Ann Hamond, but by the time this photograph was taken in 1860, Mary Ann had been married to Henry Birkbeck for more than ten years.

Fanny Hamond appears on the 1851 census living with her family at High House, Westacre. In 1861 she was at the same address. In 1871 she was staying with her married sister Emily Wicksted, the wife of Charles Wigley Wicksted, at Ludlow St Lawrence in Shropshire.

Frances Hamond never married. She died, aged 77, on 20 April 1908 at 4 The Grove, Chapel Field, Norwich, leaving an estate valued at £9774.

[From an album compiled by the sitter's brother-in-law, Somerville Gurney, a prominent Quaker of Norfolk.]
