Miss Sherbrooke
(1843-1924)
18 June 1862

Volume 7, page 150, sitting number 8846.

[Identified as ‘Miss Sherbrooke’ in the Silvy daybooks, other portraits in my collection identify the sitter as Alice Sherbrooke, younger sister of Lina Chaworth-Musters.]

Alice (‘Lally’) Louisa Sherbrooke was the second daughter of Henry Porter Lowe (later Sherbrooke) and Louisa Ann Fleming née Fane.

In 1861 she was living at Oxton Hall in Nottinghamshire with her parents, two younger siblings, a governess and twelve servants, including a butler, a footman, a coachman and a groom. Her father gave ‘Landed Proprietor’ as his profession.

On 17 February 1863 at Oxton she married George Eden Jarvis, lately a Captain in the 18th Hussars, only son of George Knollis Jarvis of Doddington Hall, an Elizabethan manor house in Lincolnshire. Their marriage produced no children.

In 1891 she was living at Doddington Hall with husband, an unmarried cousin, and nine servants, including a butler and a footman.

On the night that the 1911 census was taken, the couple were at their London flat, 23 Rutland Court, Knightsbridge.

George Eden Jarvis died suddenly at Doddington Hall on 9 August 1919, leaving an estate valued at £14,770. The Hall passed to his cousin, Rev. Robert Eden Cole.

‘Mr Jarvis was a Deputy-Lieutenant for both Lincolnshire and Notts. He succeeded his father to the Doddington estate in 1873. He was lord of the manor of Doddington, and possessed a large acreage in that parish and in the neighbouring parish of Harby. He was a popular landlord. An ardent sportsman, he used to be a keen follower of hounds, and when the Blakeney country was divided he kept his own pack, and for many years regularly hunted the woodland side’ (Nottingham Evening Post, 11 August 1919).

Mrs Jarvis died, aged 81, on 8 September 1924 at 3 Greetwell Road, Lincoln, where she had resided since the death of her husband. Her estate was valued at £19,298.
