Midshipman William Stanhope
(1844-1914)

The Sherbrooke family were landowners in Oxton, Nottinghamshire. William Sherbrooke was born at Calverton in Nottinghamshire on 23 October 1844. His parents were Henry Porter Lowe (later Sherbrooke) and Louisa Ann Fleming née Fane. The 1851 census shows him living at Southwell Hall in Nottinghamshire. At the time of 1861 census he was a Midshipman serving on the training ship HMS Racoon off the coast of Syria. He appears on the 1881 census, a retired Commander living at Colwick Hall in Nottinghamshire. 

On 1 September 1870 he married Margaret McDonald Graham in Scotland.

When the 1891 census was taken, William was living with five servants at Colwick Hall at Colwick in Nottinghamshire. Mrs Sherbrooke was elsewhere on the night of the census.

William Sherbrooke, 'a commander on the retired list of the R.N.,' died, aged 69, on 13 August 1914 at Oxten, Nothinghamshire. He left an estate valued at £19,157.
