Georges de Beauharnais
later duc de Leuchtenberg
(1852-1912)
A pencilled inscription on the reverse of the mount identifies the sitter as the 'Prince de Leuchtenberg.' This is probably one of the younger sons of Maximilian de Beauharnais, 3rd Duc de Leuchtenberg, either Eugene (1847-1901), Sergei (1849-1877), or Georges (1852-1912). Given the apparent age of the sitter, he is probably the last-named.
Disderi's catalogue for 1861 mentions portraits of Princes Serge Nicolas and Georges de Leuchtenberg.
In 1901, through the deaths and morganatic marriages of his elder brothers, George became the head of the Russian branch of the House of Beauharnais
