Augustus Sillem, Esq.

Born on 7 March 1821, Augustus Sillem was baptised at Dulwich College Chapel on 25 March 1821. His parents were Herman Sillem, a merchant, and his wife Wilhelmina Harriet Catherine Louisa Sillem.

On 28 June 1854 at St James's in Paddington he married Mary Ann Mieville, daughter of the wealthy Swiss merchant John Louis Mieville. 

In 1861 the couple were living at Lawrie Park, Summerfield, near Beckenham in Kent, with their four children. Augustus Sillem was a 'Merchant's Clerk, West Coast of South America.' 

At the time of the 1901 census, Mr and Mrs Sillem were living at 1 Queen's Gate Gardens in Kensington. Also present on the night of the census were seven live-in servants, including a butler and a footman. Mr Sillem was now 'living on [his] own means.'

Augustus Sillem died, aged 85, on 17 November 1906 at his residence in Queen's Gate Gardens. He left an estate valued at £48,485. 

His brother Herman James Sillem (1823-1897) established an iron foundry in Liverpool which employed 600 hands.
