Marquess of Carmarthen
(1828-1895)
6 December 1861

Volume 2, page 108, sitting number 1731.

The Marquess of Carmarthen is a courtesy title held by the eldest son of the Duke of Leeds.

George Godolphin Osborne was born in Paris on 11 August 1828, the eldest son of the 8th Duke of Leeds and Harriet Emma Arundel Stewart. He succeeded to his father’s titles in 1872.

On 16 January 1861, he married the Honourable Frances Georgiana Pitt-Rivers. They had four daughters and five sons, including his heir, George Osborne.

The 9th Duke of Leeds died on 23 December 1895.

A short obituary appeared in the Sheffield Evening Telegraph (23 December 1895). 'The Duke of Leeds died at Hornley Castle, near Bedale, Yorkshire, at five o'clock this morning, after a short illness. His Grace is succeeded by the Marquis of Carmarthen, M.P. for Brixton, thereby creating a Parliamentary vacancy. The deceased recently contracted a severe chill, which led to an attack of bronchitis. He took to his bed about a week ago, and gradually sank. His Grace was attended by Dr Fothergill, who from the first gave little hope of his recovery. The late Duke was sixty-seven years of age, and was much esteemed by his tenantry and the inhabitants of Bedale, but he took no active part in political life. Lord Carmarthen is at present yachting in the Mediterranean.'
