(1839-1875)
17 February 1865

Volume 12, page 245, sitting number 16,127.

Identified as 'J.T. Rudd Esq.' in the Silvy daybooks, this can only be Lieutenant John Trohear Rudd of the 59th (The 2nd Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot.

Baptised on 24 April 1839 at All Saints Church in Cockermouth, Cumbria, his parents were William and Mary Ann Rudd.

He joined the 59th Regiment of Foot as an Ensign (by purchase) on 30 April 1858.

At the time that this portrait was made in 1865, Rudd was a Lieutenant. According to Hart’s Army List, he attained the rank of Captain on 7 August of the following year.

He died on 27 June 1875, aged 36, at Sandgate in Kent. Since he died intestate, letters of administration were granted to his brother Major William Frederick John Rudd of the 1st (Royal Scots) Regiment of Foot. His estate was valued at £1500. He was buried on 1 July 1875 at Norwood Cemetery in South London.
