Born on 27 November 1866, Father Mathias Auer died, aged 41, on 12 April 1908 at St Mary's Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. According to his death certificate, the cause of death was 'tuberculous enteritis,' with 'abcess of rectum' listed as a contributory cause. He was buried on 13 April 1908 in Portland, Michigan. 

The photograph was originally framed with the following information: 'Fr. Auer / St Patrick's Catholic Church / Portland (Ionia County), MI / 1908.'
