An amusing cabinet card showing a small European child seated at the wheel of a large automobile, with numerous Vietnamese children as his passengers. The photograph was taken in Hanoi, the capital of Tonkin in French Indochine. A droll inscription on the reverse of the mount reads: ‘André Boillot à 6 mois au volant d’un auto Peugeot conduissant au Paradis des petits chinois et chinoises’ [André Boillot, aged 6 months, seated at the wheel of a Peugeot car driving some little Chinese boys and Chinese girls to Heaven]. To get the joke, you need to know that André Boillot (1891-1932) was a popular French racing car driver, a member of the Peugeot factory team. Although Boillot began racing in 1908 when still only young, this photograph probably dates from before his years of success and fame, which would mean that the inscription is therefore a later addition.

Photographed by Hung-Ky of Hanoi.

condition: The print is in excellent condition. The mount shows some edge and corner wear.
