Arthur Balfour
A cabinet card portrait of Arthur Balfour (1848-1930), from 1922 1st Earl of Balfour.

Arthur James Balfour was a Conservative politician and statesman. He served as Prime Minister from 1902 to 1905, a time when his party and government became divided over the issue of tariff reform. Later, as Foreign Secretary, he authored the Balfour Declaration of 1917, which supported the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

Photographed by Elliott and Fry of 55, Baker Street, London.

In 1863, the photographer Joseph John Elliott (1835-1903) and the entrepreneur Clarence Edmund Fry (1840-1897) founded a successful photographic business which was to continue long after their deaths. In 1965 Elliott and Fry amalgamated with Bassano and Vandyck.

condition: The print shows a few small imperfections, mainly in the area of the background, but is otherwise in excellent condition, with rich tonal range. The mount shows some yellowing at its edges, most noticeably recto in the lower margin, but is otherwise also in excellent condition.
