Prince Albert

A carte-de-visite portrait of Prince Albert, the Prince Consort.

Following the death of Prince Albert, some 70,000 portraits of him were ordered from the wholesalers A. Marion & Co. in a week, while the Photographic News reported that a Paris printseller had sold 30,000 in a single day.

Photographed by John Mayall of 224, Regent Street, London. Mayall’s backplate is covered by a printed paper label identifying Henry Hering of Regent Street as the photographer.

condition: The print presents a pale patch of discolouration in the area of the background, just behind the sitter’s head, but is otherwise in excellent condition, as is the mount.
