|A gelatin silver print on glossy stock, most likely of the 1940’s, showing a (presumably) French bodybuilder with impressive upper-body development. The sitter is unfortunately unidentified.
Photographed by Studio Arax of 31, boulevard Raspail, Paris, identified by the studio’s logo in the lower right-hand corner of the image, and by the studio’s wetstamp on the reverse of the print. [The wetstamp is the earlier, unboxed version, but the studio logo within the print, as opposed to the studio’s details printed recto in the lower margin of the border, suggests a later date.] A bodybuilder himself, Arax produced beautifully lighted, classic studies of handsome athletes and bodybuilders, from the 1930’s to the late 1950’s.
The print, including a narrow white border, measures 9.2” by 6.9” (236 mm by 176 mm).
