A 1/6th plate ambrotype of a young sitting next to a rather sickly-looking plant in a terracotta flower-pot. It seems improbable that the plant is a studio prop, and therefore more than likely that the man has bought it into the studio specifically in order to be photographed next to it, a conclusion borne out by his air of pride.

A tooled brass, oval matt, and a chased brass inner-frame.

Housed in a very dark purple (almost black) leather half-case, tooled in a floral pattern, with a hook for hanging.

condition: Some very slight flaking of the enamel just visible in a raking light.
