[An inked inscription verso in a period hand reads: 'April 4th 61 / Given me by E.G. / Lady Goring.']

Born on 4 May 1835, Eliza Molyneux was the daughter of Reverend Capel Molyneux and Maria née Carpenter. She was baptised on 5 June 1835 at St Mary Magdalene’s, Woolwich, Kent.

On 21 April 1857 at St James’s, Paddington, she became the second wife of Sir Charles Goring, 9th Bt.

Sir Charles Goring died on 3 November 1884 at the age of 56.

On 22 January 1885 his widow married secondly Colonel Robert Ashworth Godolphin Cosby.

Mrs Eliza Cosby died, aged 84, on 20 March 1920.

‘With feelings of deep regret we announce the death of Mrs Cosby, wife of Colonel R.G. Cosby, V.L., Stradbally Hall. The deceased has not been in good health for a considerable period. During the many years she has been resident in the Hall she enjoyed the love and esteem of friends and relatives, and to those residing in the neighbourhood and dependents on the estate she has been a kind friend and benefactor’ (Carlow Sentinel, 10 April 1920).

Colonel Cosby ‘of Stradbally Hall, Queen’s County,’ died later that same year at the age of 83. He was ‘the descendant of a very ancient Irish family’ (Kilkenny Moderator, 6 November 1920).
