[Identified as ‘Miss Anna C. Birley’ in the Silvy daybooks, she visited the studio with her mother Mrs Thomas Hornby Birley, who is the next entry in the daybooks.]

Born on 17 August 1845 in Chorton-on-Medlock, Manchester, Anne Katherine Birley was the eldest child of Thomas Hornby Birley and his wife Anne née Leatham. She was baptised in Manchester on 27 September 1845. Thomas gave ‘Spinner’ as his profession. 

When the census was taken in 1861, she was living with her parents and two siblings at Highfield Hall, Heaton Norris, Lancashire. 

In 1901 she was living at 27 Eccles Old Road, Pendleton, Lancashire, with a cook, a housemaid and a parlourmaid. She gave ‘Living on own means’ as her profession or occupation. 

‘Annie’ Katherine Birley never married. She died, aged 77, on 11 May 1923 at South Bank, Pendleton, Lancashire, leaving an estate valued at £12,814. 

She was buried in Weaste Cemetery, Salford, Greater Manchester.
