Mrs Stovin Pennyman
(1835-1914)
14 June 1862

Volume 7, page 142, sitting number 8814.

[Mrs Pennyman visited the studio with her parents, whose portraits are the next two entries in the Silvy daybooks.]

Born on 24 September 1835, Mary Mackenzie Coltman was the daughter of William Joseph Coltman and his wife Philadelphia née Worsley.

On 19 September 1855 she married James Stovin Pennyman, whose father had changed his surname from Worsley to Pennyman by royal licence. Their marriage produced five children.

The family appear on the 1861 living at Ormesby Hall near Middlesbrough in North Yorkshire, the residence of James’s parents. James inherited the house and estate on the death of his father in 1870.

James Stovin Pennyman died at Ormesby Hall on 2 June 1896, leaving an estate valued at £46,332.

Mrs Mary Mackenzie Pennyman appears on the 1911 census, living at Park End, Ormseby — presumably a dower house — with her 52-year-old, unmarried son Alfred and four servants.

She died there on 15 May 1914 at the age of 78.
