The Rev. and Hon. Arthur Bateman-Hanbury

Born on 13 March 1829, Arthur Allen Bateman-Hanbury was the son of William Bateman-Hanbury, 1st Baron Bateman of Shobdon, and his wife Elizabeth née Chichester.

He completed his education at Christ Church, Oxford, and in 1853 he became first a deacon and then a priest. That same year he became the Rector of Shobdon in Herefordshire, a living he held until his death in 1919. From 1867 onwards he was also a Prebendary of Hereford Cathedral. 

On 2 February 1858 he married Mary Ward Davenport, daughter of John Davenport and his wife Charlotte née Coltman. 

When the census was taken in 1861 the couple were at the Rectory in Shobdon with their first child Edith, aged 10 months, and six servants, including a butler and a groom. 

He appears on the 1911 census, a widower living at the Rectory in Shobdon with three unmarried daughters and six servants. 

The Reverend and Honourable Arthur Allen Bateman-Hanbury died on 5 March 1919 at Shobdon in Herefordshire. He left an estate valued at £5664. 

‘Prebendary Bateman Hanbury, who has died at the age of ninety, was a son of the first Baron Bateman, and uncle of the present peer. He was at Christ Church with the late Lord Salisbury and with H.P. Liddon. He had been Rector of Shobdon, near Leominster, for nearly sixty-three years ,and he received a prebend stall in Hereford Cathedral from Bishop Hamden in 1867. He was an excellent clergyman of the old school, and was held in great esteem. Viscount Bateman, who was a prominent figure at the Court of George II, died in 1802, and his large estates passed to his cousin, William Hanbury, of Kelmarsh Hall, Northamptonshire, whose eldest son sat for many years in the House of Commons and was raised to the peerage by Lord Melbourne in 1837’ (Truth, 19 March 1919).
