Reverend John Webster
(1835-1878)

[The sitter is identified as 'John Webster M.A.' on the album page.]

The likeliest candidate for a fuller identification is John Webster, son of William Webster of 22 Highbury Place, Islington. Born in London on 21 June 1835, he went to up to Caius College, Cambridge, on 23 April 1856, graduating BA in 1860 and MA in 1866. He was ordained a deacon in 1860 and became a priest the following year. He was Curate at the Chapel of Ease in Islington from 1861 to 1863 and the Curate of St Barnabas in Islington from 1863 to 1866. He became the Vicar there in 1866 and held the living until his death in 1878. On 10 June 1862 at Manchester Cathedral he married Frances Ann Stuart, daughter of William Barnet Stuart. He died on 1 June 1878 at 37 Loraine Road, Holloway, leaving an estate valued at £450. The Islington Gazette on 7 June 1878 carried a detailed report of his funeral.

Alternatively, this might be John Webster (1825-1886), son of another William Webster; he was Chaplain to the Duke of Westminster from 1854 to 1866; in 1866 he was appointed Vicar of King's Heath in Worcestershire, a living he held until his death in 1886.

A third possibility is John Webster (1829-1888), son of Edward Webster. From 1860 to 1888 he was the Vicar of Charnock Richard in Lancashire.
