Mrs S. D'Arcy Irvine
(1821-1902)
23 June 1862

Volume 7, page 188, sitting number 8997.

[Identified as 'Mrs S. D'Arcy Irvine' in the Silvy daybooks, this is almost certainly the widow of Somerset Gore D'Arcy Irvine.]

Born at Dungannon in Ireland in or about 1821, Emblyn Hannyngton was the youngest daughter of Thomas Knox Hannyngton of Dungannon Castle, County Tyrone.

On 28 September 1846 at St George's in Hanover Square, London, Somerset Gore D'Arcy Irvine, youngest son of Sir Gorges Irvine, Bart., of Castle Irvine, county Fermanagh, married Emblyn, youngest daughter of Thomas Knox Hannyngton, Esq., of Dungannon Castle, county Tyrone, 'and niece of Major-General Caulfield' (Freeman's Journal, 2 October 1846).

There is some confusion about the groom's surname both in contemperary sources and today on the Internet. I am following his marriage certificate, which clearly gives his forenames as 'Somerset Gore,' in that order.  At the time of their marriage, the groom was a 36-year-old widower and the bride was a 25-year-old spinster. He gave his address as 79 Ebury Street and she gave hers as 82 Eaton Square.

Somerset Gore D'Arcy Irvine died on 7 July 1850 at Liège in Belgium (Manchester Courier, 20 July 1850).

When the census was taken in 1861 his widow was living at Firfield House at Bedminster in Somerset, the home of her sister Euphemia and her brother-in-law, Major-General William Sullivan, CB.

In the summer of 1864 'Mrs Somerset d'Arcy Irvine' was living at St Anne's Cottage, Pelhamfield, Ryde, on the Isle of Wight (Isle of Wight Observer, 4 June 1864).

The 1871 census records her at the same address, now styled 'St Anne's House.' The head of the household was her widowed sister Euphemia Sullivan. Emblyn was 50 years old.

Mrs Emblyn D'Arcy Irvine died on 22 March 1902 at 3 Wharfedale Street in South Kensington. Her age at time of death was recorded as 90 but this does not correspond with any other source. She left an estate valued at £346.
