Henry B. Milner

Born on 17 December 1823 at Nun Appleton Hall (a former priory) near Bolton Percy in Yorkshire, Henry Beilby William Milner was the second son of Sir William Mordaunt Sturt Milner, the fourth Baronet, and Harriet Elizabeth née Cavendish-Bentinck.
He was educated at Eton College and at Merton College, Oxford (BA, 1845; MA, 1850). From 1845 to 1854 he was a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford.
On 16 August 1853 he married Charlotte Henrietta Beresford, daughter of the Most Reverend Marcus Gervais Beresford and his wife Mary née L'Estrange. Their marriage produced six children. Their grandson became the ninth Baronet and relocated his family to South Africa, where the 10th Baronet now lives.
Henry and Charlotte Henrietta appear on the 1871 census living at West Retford House, Retford, Nottinghamshire. The household also included their six children, a German governess and eleven servants. Henry gave ‘Banker and Land Owner’ as his profession.
Henry Beilby William Milne died, aged 52, on 7 June 1876 at Kirkstall Grange in Leeds, leaving an estate valued at £90,000.
‘Yesterday afternoon the remains of Mr Henry Beilby William Milner, J.P., of Kirkstall Grange, Leeds, were interred in the family’s vault in the churchyard of Acaster, near Nun Appleton. The body was conveyed by road to Acaster, whilst the members of the deceased gentleman’s family and near friends from Leeds proceeded by special train to Bolton Percy, and from thence were conveyed by carriages to the church, where their numbers were increased by those who had arrived by other routes. In addition to the mourners and near friends of the family, the cortège was swelled at the gates of the churchyard by many of the principal residents of the neighbourhood, and many of the villagers were also present to pay the last tribute of respect to one of whom they speak, with all who knew him personally, with the deepest respect and affection’ (Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer, 15 June 1876).
