Mrs Charlotte Elliott

[Identified in the Silvy daybooks only as ‘Mrs Elliott,’ a signed slip of paper pasted across the lower margin of the carte gives her name more fully as ‘Charlotte Elliott.’]

Born at St Stithians in Cornwall in 1807, Charlotte Gould was the daughter of John and Jane Gould. She was baptised at St Stithians on 12 May 1807.

On 25 April 1849 at Pitminster in Somerset she became the second wife of Reverend James Elliott, the Curate of Crowcombe in Somerset. Reverend Elliott’s first wife Marianne had died on 21 February 1844, three years after their marriage, leaving him with a young daughter, Constance Louisa.

In 1851 the family were living at Vicarage House in Crowcombe with a governess and three servants, all female.

Reverend James Elliott died at Pitminister Lodge on 15 December 1856.

When the census was taken in 1861 Charlotte was a widow living with her step-daughter at Pitminster. Constance got married two years later.

In 1881 Charlotte was living at Tormaham in Devon with nephew Lionel Francis Gould (22), niece Lillian Jane Gould (20, and three female servants.

In 1901 Charlotte was still living in Tormaham, now with a ‘maid attendant’ and a cook.

Charlotte Elliott died, aged 95, at St Luke’s Lodge in Torquay on 25 October 1902, leaving an estate valued at £438.
