Miss Capel Cure

[Identified in the Silvy daybooks and by an inked inscription verso as ‘Miss Capel Cure,’ this is probably Harriet Rosamond Capel Cure, daughter of Capel Cure, who visited the studio on 12 June 1861. Her brother, Reverend Edward Cure, later Edward Capel Cure, also sat for Silvy on 28 September 1861, as did her mother on 6 May 1862. Harriet Rosamond Capel Cure had two sisters, but one had died and the other had married when this portrait was taken.]

Born in Marylebone on 22 July 1831, Harriet Rosamond Cure was the daughter of Capel Cure and his wife Frederika née Cheney. She was baptised at Bobbingworth in Essex on 28 September 1831. At some point after her birth, the family began to use the father’s first name as part of their surname, and she became Harriet Rosamond Capel Cure. The two names eventually became a double-barrelled surname.

She appears on the 1851 census living with her parents and siblings at Blake Hall Manor, Bobbingworth, Essex. When the census was taken in 1871, the family were living at 51 Grosvenor Street, Mayfair.

Miss Harriet Rosamond Capel-Cure never married. She appears on the 1901 census living with a housekeeper at 1 Duke Street Mansions, Grosvenor Square, London. She died there on 6 October 1901, leaving an estate valued at £30,850. She was buried at Bobbingworth on 11 October 1901.
