Mrs Hamilton Crake

Born in or about 1826, Jane Wood was the daughter of George Wood.

On 10 December 1850 at St Mary’s in Ealing she married merchant William Hamilton Crake.

The family appear on the 1871 census living at 34 Gloucester Square, on the north side of Hyde Park. The household included three daughters and two sons; three of these children had been born at Madras in India. William gave ‘East India Merchant’ as his profession. Also present on the night of the census were ten servants, including a butler and a footman.

When the 1881 census was taken, the family were still at the same address.

William Hamilton Crake died, aged 58, on 22 November 1883 at 34 Gloucester Square, leaving an estate valued at a phenomenal £209,825.

In 1891 Jane was living with or visiting her brother Edward Wood at his residence, Culmington Manor in Shropshire.

Jane Crake ‘of 34 Gloucester-square’ died on 18 May 1895 at Borrowstone in Aberdeen. She left an estate valued at £16,649.
