Countess of Mount Charles
(1835-1905)
13 May 1861

Volume 3, page 224, sitting number 3586.

Born in London on 14 May 1835, Lady Jane St Maur Blanche Stanhope was the only daughter and heiress of Major-General Charles Stanhope, 4th Earl of Harrington. Her mother had formerly been the actress Maria Foote until her marriage in 1831.

On 17 June 1854 at the Chapel Royal, Whitehall, she married George Henry Conyngham, then styled Earl of Mount Charles, who became 3rd Marquess Conyngham on the death of his father in 1876. Their marriage produced five daughters and two sons.

The couple appear on the 1861 census with their first four children living or staying at 2 Marine Villas, Hythe. The Earl of Mount Charles gave his profession as ‘Army Captain, 1st Life Guards.’ Also present on the night of the census were nine live-in servants, including a butler and footman.

Lady Conyngham became a widow in 1882. Her elder son, who then succeeded as the fourth marquess, died in 1897 at the age of 40. Her grandson then inherited the title.

The dowager marchioness died, aged 72, on 28 November 1907 at The Mount, Ascot, Berkshire. She left an estate valued at £68,915
