The Honourable W.W. Addington
(1824-1913)

Born on 25 March 1824, William Wells Addington was the son of Reverend William Leonard Addington, 2nd Viscount Sidmouth, who was the eldest son of the Prime Minister Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth.

On 29 September 1848 he married his first cousin Georgiana Susan Pellew, daughter of the Very Reverend and Honourable George Pellew and the Honourable Frances née Addington. The bride’s paternal grandfather was son of Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth; her maternal grandfather was Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth. Their marriage produced nine children.

Addington gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. From 1863 to 1864 he was the Member of Parliament for Devizes. On 25 March 1864 he succeeded to his titles and estates, becoming 3rd Viscount Sidmouth.

Lord Sidmouth died, aged 89, on 28 October 1913. He left an estate valued at £63,537.

‘Viscount Sidmouth died at Bournemouth yesterday. Deceased, who was 89 years old, sat as Conservative member of Parliament for Devizes during 1863-64. He was taken seriously ill at the end of last year, but recovered sufficiently well to journey to Bournemouth last summer, and  he had resided there ever since. He took a great interest in the county affairs in Devonshire. […] Lord Sidmouth served for some twenty years in the navy, which he left for politics. The heir to the title is his son, the Hon. Gerald Addington’ (Dundee Courier, 29 October 1913).
