Lady Jane Hay
(1830-1920)

Born at Geneva in Switzerland in 1830, Lady Jane Hay was the daughter of George Hay, 8th Marquess of Tweeddale. Her mother was Lady Susan née Montagu, a daughter of the 5th Duke of Manchester.

On 9 June 1863 at St Peter’s Church, Eaton Square, she married Colonel Richard Chambre Hayes Taylor, CB, a career army officer who had served in the Anglo-Burmese War, the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. His last promotion was to the rank of General in 1880. His last posting was as governor of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. From 1887 until his death in 1904 he was Colonel of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders.

Their marriage produced one son and four daughters.

In 1871 the family were living at 16 Eaton Place, London. Also present on the night of the census were ten servants, including a butler and a footman.

Lady Jane Taylor died, aged 90, on 13 December 1920 at 16 Eaton Place, leaving an estate valued at £17,072.
