(1843-1874)
2 August 1864

Volume 12, page 155, sitting number 15,768.

Born in the London district of St Pancras in 1843, Katherine (‘Kitty’) Anne Newton was the daughter of Edward Newton, FRCS, and his wife Louisa née Kebbell. She was baptised at St Pancras Old Church on 6 June 1843.

In 1861 she was living with her parents at 30 Fitzroy Square, London. Her father gave ‘FRCS, General Practioner’ as his profession.

On 14 May 1867 at Trinity Church in Marylebone she married Charles Samuel Chiver, Esq., son of surgeon Thomas Chilver, FRCS.

‘On 14th inst. at Trinity Church, Marylebone, by the Right Rev. the Lord Bishop of Lichfield […] Charles S. Chilver, Esq., only child of Thomas Farquhar Chilver, Esq., of 27 Upper Brunswick-place, Brighton, to Katherine Anne, only child of Edward Newton, Esq., of 4 Upper Wimpole-street, W.’ (Morning Post, 20 May 1867).

The following year her husband was appointed the Curate of Westcott near Dorking in Surrey. From 1869 to 1873 he was the Curate of Brighton. In 1876 he became the Incumbant of the Chapel Royal, Brighton, a living he held until 1879.

The couple appear on the 1871 census living at 5 Peel Terrace in Brighton with their young son Arthur Farquhar Chilver and three servants. A daughter, Agnes Lucy Chilver, was born in Brighton later that year.

According to an announcement in the South London Chronicle (13 September 1873), Katherine gave birth to another son on 6 September 1873 at Dyke Road, Brixton (‘the wife of the Rev. C.S. Chilver, of a son’). However,  the GRO indexes record a daughter, Helen Katherine Chilver, born in Brighton in the last quarter of 1873.

Mrs Katherine Anne Chilver died, aged 30, on 5 March 1874 at 4 Upper Wimpole Street, London. According to her death certificate, the cause of death was ‘Hypertrophy with Induration of the Brain / Uncertain Hypertrophy of the Thyroid Gland.’

[The initials ‘H.M.S.’ inked verso on the mount identify the original recipient of the carte-de-visite, Hannah Maria Sowerby, sister of James Page Sowerby whose portrait by Silvy appears elsewhere on this page.]
