Edward Newton

Edward Newton was the son of Joseph Newton and his wife Jane née Bell. He was baptised on 9 November 1815 at Hexham in Northumberland.

On 14 July 1842 at Brighton ‘Edward Newton, Esq., surgeon, Howland-street, Fitzroy-square, London, and son of Mrs Newton, Ryton’ married ‘Louisa, third daughter of the late John Kebbel, Esq., Stroud Green House, Essex’ (Newcastle Courant, 22 July 1842). Their marriage produced one child, Katherine Anne Newton, born in the London district of St Pancras in 1844.

When the census was taken in 1851 the family were living with four servants at 26 Howland Street, off Tottenham Court Road. Edward gave ‘Fellow of College of Surgeons, General Practioner’ as his profession.

In 1861 they were living at 30 Fitzroy Square, and by 1871 Edward and Louisa had moved to 4 Upper Wimpole Street, Marylebone. In 1881 Edward was a ‘Surgeon, Retired’ living at 85 Gloucester Terrace, Paddington.

Edward Newton, FRCS, of 85 Gloucester Terrace, Marylebone, died, aged 78, on 16 February 1894 leaving an estate valued at £49,399.
