Lina Chaworth-Musters
(1842-1912)
4 April 1861

Volume 3, page 38, sitting number 2851.

Identified verso as ‘Lina Chaworth-Musters,’ this is Caroline Anne Chaworth-Musters, wife of John Chaworth-Musters of Annesley Park, Nottinghamshire. Born in or about 1842 at Calverton in Nottinghamshire, she was the eldest daughter of Henry Porter Lowe (later Sherbrooke) of Oxton, Nottinghamshire.

On 15 March 1859 at Oxton she married ‘John Chaworth Musters of Annesley-park and Colnwick Hall, Notts.’ (The Times, 17 March 1859).

The couple appear on the 1861 census, living at Annesely Hall with their one-year-old son, John. Also present on the night of the census were eighteen servants, including a butler, a footman, a coachman and four grooms.

Mrs Chaworth-Musters died, aged 70, on 1 February 1912 at Wiverton Hall, Nottinghamshire. She left an estate valued at £4313.

'The death occurred on Thursday, at Wiverton Hall, Bingham, Nottinghamshire, of Mrs Chaworth-Musters, at the age of 70 years. She was the relict of Mr John Chaworth-Musters, and extensive landowner in the county, once famous in the hunting field. [...] She was the niece of the late Lord Sherbrooke, better known as Mr Robert Lowe' (Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer, 3 February 1912).

Her remains 'were laid to rest in the little village churchyard at Tithby on Tuesday. At the express desire of the deceased, the body had been taken to Leicester for cremation, and the ashes, which were enclosed in a small earthenware casket, were conveyed direct to Tithby.' The casket 'was placed, in accordance with the deceased lady's wishes, in a small grave in close proximity to the monument erected to the memory of her youngest son, Mr Charles Chaworth Musters, who died in South Africa during the war' (Grantham Journal, 10 February 1912).

The University of Nottingham holds various letters received by Lina from her husband and members of her family.]
