Lady Caroline Mordaunt
(1815-1913)
17 June 1861

Volume 4, page 96, sitting number 4456.

[The sitter is identified as 'Lady Mordaunt' in the Silvy daybooks.]

Born Caroline Sophia Murray on the Isle of Man while her father was Bishop of Sodor and Man, her great-grandfather was Sir John Murray, 3rd Duke of Atholl.

On 7 August 1834 she married Sir John Mordaunt, 9th Baronet. After the death of her first husband in 1845, she married Gustavus Thomas Smith and bore him two daughters. However, she continued to be called Lady Mordaunt until her death on 28 March 1913.

A short obituary appeared in The Times (31 March 1913). ‘The Dowager Lady Mordaunt died on Friday at 63, Warwick-square, in her 99th year. She was Caroline Sophia, second daughter of the Right Rev. George Murray, Bishop of Rochester, and granddaughter of Lord George Murray, Bishop of St. Davids, brother of the fourth Duke of Atholl. She married Sir John Mordaunt, the ninth baronet, in 1834, and became the mother of the tenth baronet of Mr John Murray Mordaunt, heir-presumptive of the 11th holder of the title, Sir Osbert L’Estrange Mordaunt. Sir John Mordaunt died in 1845, and she married, secondly, in 1853, Captain Gustavus T. Smith, who died in 1875. Lady Mordaunt was the mother of Canon Osbert Mordaunt, who was well known as a cricketer in Eton and Warwickshire teams.’

[From an album probably compiled by either George Charles Pratt (1799-1866), 2nd Marquess Camden or by his son, John Charles Pratt (1840-1872), from 1866 3rd Marquess Camden.]
