Alice Hope Johnstone

Born at Dumfriesshire in Scotland in 1844, Alice Minna Hope Johnstone was the second child and only daughter of William James Hope Johnstone and his wife, the Honourable Octavia Sophia Hope Johnstone née Bosville Macdonald.

Her father died in 1850 as the result of an injury to his spine sustained by a fall while out looking for poachers.

Alice appears on the 1851 census living at Hove in Sussex with her mother and siblings. In 1861 the family were living at 51 South Street in Mayfair and in 1871 they were living at 22 Cadogan Place, Chelsea.

Alice never married. She died, aged only 36, on 15 September 1881 at 22 Cadogan Place, Chelsea, leaving a personal estate valued at £1491. According to her death certificate, the cause of death was 'Cerebral congestion / Sudden collapse.'
