Mrs Mary Slocock
(1829-1898)
October 1866

Volume 8, page 46, sitting number 9804.

[Identified as 'Mrs Slocock' in the Silvy daybooks, this probably Mrs Mary Slocock, wife of Captain Charles Samuel Slocock. The lady would have been about 36 years old when she visited Silvy's studio.]

Born Mary Goddard in or about 1829, she was the only child of Edward Goddard of Stone House, Crookham, Berkshire. She married Charles Samuel Slocock on 13 June 1860 at St Luke's, Cheltenham. Their marriage produced eight children.

Mrs Mary Slocock died, aged 69, at Putney on 22 January 1898.

According to the announcement of her death in the Reading Mercury (22 January 1898), 'Much regret has been caused in this town and neighbourhood by the intelligence of the death of the wife of Mr Chas. S. Slocock, of Putney, formerly of Donnington Lodge, and senior partner in the late banking firm of Slocock, Matthews, and Co. The deceased lady was the mother of a numerous family of sons and daughters. The funeral will take place at Shaw Church this (Saturday) afternoon, at three o'clock.'

[From an album compiled by Rose Isabella Susan Preston (1842-1924), later the wife of Lieutenant-Colonel Charles H. Shuttleworth. At the time that she compiled the album, she was living at Madehurst Lodge, Madehurst, Sussex.]
