Volume 3, page 212, sitting number 3538.

[Identified as 'John H. Arkwright, this is probably John Hungerford Arkwright of Hampton Court, Hope-under-Dinmore, Herefordshire. His brother, Richard Arkwright, had visited Silvy's studio on 25 March 1861.]

Born on 12 July 1833 at the family home, Hampton Court, near Leominster in Herefordshire, John Hungerford Arkwright was the eldest son of John Arkwright of Hampton Court and the great-grandson of the cotton-spinning industrialist Richard Arkwright. Educated at Eton and at Christ Church, Oxford, he inherited his estates at the age of 25, upon the death of his father in 1858.

On 12 June 1866 at Yazor in Herefordshire he married Charlotte Lucy Davenport, youngest daughter of the late John Davenport of Foxley, Herefordshire, and of Westwood Hall, Staffordshire. The marriage produced one son and three daughters.

John Hungerford Arkwright died at Hampton Court on 25 May 1905, leaving an estate valued at £17,682.

According to the Gloucester Journal (27 May 1905): 'The death took place on Thursday at Hampton Court, Leominster, of Mr J. H. Arkwright at the age of 72. Mr Arkwright was High Sheriff of Herefordshire in 1862, and was appointed Lord-Lieutenant in 1901, but resigned recently owing to ill-health. From 1858-67 he was with Sir Velters Cornewall, Bart., joint M.F.H. of the Herefordshire Hounds, and from 1869-74 he was M.F.H. of the North Herefordshire pack. Among the numerous other public offices which he at one time or another filled may be mentioned that of member of the Council of the Royal Agricultural Society in 1862 and a vice-president of the Society in 1901; president of the Three Choirs' Festival at Hereford in 1903. He was a talented musician, a successful breeder of pedigree Herefords, and a most popular landlord. His heir is Mr J. S. Arkwright, who has been M.P. for Hereford since 1900.'
