Lady Mary Craven
(1837-1890)

Volume 1, page 75, sitting number 502.

[The sitter is identified in the Silvy daybooks and on the album page as ‘Lady Mary Craven’ but further identification is a little problematic.]

This is probably Lady Mary Catherine Craven née Yorke. Born on 19 May 1837, the daughter of Admiral Charles Philip Yorke, 4th Earl of Hardwicke, she married William George Craven on 20 July 1857. Her husband was a nephew of the 2nd Earl of Craven. A report in The Times (20 July 1867) mentions her attending a ball at India house with her sister, Lady Agneta Yorke.

Lady Mary Craven died, aged 53, on 14 December 1890 at 'The Highlands' near Wadhurst in Sussex, 'after a long illness' (Sussex Agricultural Express, 19 December 1890). Administration of her estate was granted to her husband William George Craven 'of 13 Brook-street Hanover-square in the County of Middlesex.' She left effects valued at £614.
