(1828-1877)
4 May 1861

Volume 3, page 196, sitting number 3476.

[Identified by an inked inscription in the lower margin and by the Silvy daybooks only as 'Major Tedlie,' Hart's Army List for 1862-1863 provides his first name and his regiment, which was the 60th Rifles.]

Captain William Tedlie appears on the 1861 census stationed with his regiment at Hougham near Dover in Kent. He gave his age as 32 (so he was born in or about 1829) and his place of birth as the Cape of Good Hope.

According to the London Gazette of 4 July 1873, Major and Brevet-Lieutenant-Colonel Willliam Tedlie was retiring from the 60th Foot, receiving the price of his commission.

According to information received from his great-great-nephew (December 2009) William Tedlie's parents were Major Edward Tedlie and Alice née Walch. He was born at the Cape of Good Hope on 24 July 1828 and he died on 6 December 1877 at Boulogne in France.

According to his obituary in Homeward Mail from India, China and the East (17 December 1877); 'The scenes of this officer's services were chiefly in India. He entered the service as second lieutenant 1st batt. 60th Royal Rifles, May 5, 1848; lieutenant, April 13, 1852; captain, Jan. 25, 1856; brevet major, for service in the field July 20, 1858; brevet lieut.-colonel, March 25, 1869; major, April 9, 1870; retired from service in 1873. He was attached to the 53rd Regt. and was present with it in the operations against the mutineers in India in Dec. 1857, including the actions of Khodagunge and entry into Futtyghur. Served as deputy-assistant quartermaster-general to the Roorkee Field Force under Brigdr.-Gen. Jones in the campaign in Rohilkund in 1858, including the actions of Bugawalla and Nugeena, relief of Moradabad, action on the Dojura, capture of the fort of Bunnai, pursuit of the enemy to the left bank of the Goomtee, and destruction of the fort of Mahomdee (brevet major). Served as brigade major to the Shahjahanpore Brigade in 1858 and 1859 including the action of Bunkagong, under Sir Thomas Seaton, and operations in Oude (medal).'
