(1829-1892)
2 May 1861

Volume 3, page 181, sitting number 3416.

According to Hart’s Army List (1864), Hugh Maurice Jones of the 73rd Foot entered the Army as an Ensign (22 April 1846), became a Lieutenant on 9 August 1850, and rose to the rank of Captain on 1 July 1858. On 28 July 1858 he attained the rank of Major, and on 11 February 1862 he was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel.

Major Jones served with 13th Light Infantry in the Crimea from 30 June 1855 and was present at the Seige and Fall of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjedie, and Turkish Medal). He also served in the India Campaign of 1857-1858 (Brevet of Major and Medal).

By 1866 he is listed under 'Lieutenant-Colonels who have retired by sale of their commissions.'

On 23 February 1865 he married Favale Isabella Gertrude Bevan at Brixworth in Northamptonshire. According to the Wrexham Advertiser (4 March 1865): 'Lieutenant-Colonel Hugh Maurice Jones, of the Royal Carnarvon Militia, and late Lieutenant-Colonel of the 73rd Perthshire Regiment, second son of the late William Jones, Esq., of Hartsheath Park, Flintshire [married] Favele Isabella Gertrude, eldest daughter of Richard Lee Bevan, Esq., of Brixworth Hall, Northampton.'

In 1875, he took the additional surname Mortimer. According to a brief announcement in Eddowes's Journal and General Advertiser for Shropshire (13 January 1875): 'Mr Hugh Maurice Jones, of Plas Newydd, Llanfair Dyffreyn Clwyd, has taken the surname Mortimer in addition to Jones.'

At the time of the 1891 census he and his wife were living with their 19-year-old son Wilson at 'Woodside,' a house at Walton in Gordano in North Somerset. Aged 62, Hugh gave 'Stratford le Bow, Essex' as his place of birth.

He died on 6 October 1892, aged 63, at Clevedon in Somerset. The announcement of his death in the Morning Post (10 October 1892) described him as 'Hugh Maurice Jones-Mortimer of Plasnewydd, Llanfair, Ruthin, retired lieutenant-colonel, in his sixty-fourth year,'
