Edward Heneage
(1840-1922)
3 September 1860

Volume 2, page 2, sitting number 1306.

Born 29 March 1840, Edward Heneage was the son of George Fieschi Heneage and Frances née Tasburgh. Following his education at Eton, he joined the 1st Regiment of Life Guards, retiring in 1863. In 1864 he succeeded to the Hainton estates and married Lady Eleanor Cecelia Hare, youngest daughter of the Earl of Listowel. Their marriage produced nine children.

From 1863 to 1868 he sat in Parliament as the MP for Lincoln. From 1871 he was the Chairman of the Central Chamber of Agriculture. For many years he was also President of the National Sea Fisheries Protection Association. In 1890 he returned to Parliament as the Liberal MP for Grimsby, retaining his seat until 1892. However, he was again returned in a by-election the following year.

In recognition of his many years of service he was created 1st Baron Heneage of Hainton on 8 June 1896.

Lord Heneage died at Hainton Hall on 10 August 1922, aged 82. His estate was valued at £221,427.

According to his lengthy obituary in the Skegness Standard (16 August 1922): 'The late Peer was for a few years in the Army, and after retiring from the Service entered the House of Commons, where he was a strong supporter of the interests of agriculture and sea fisheries. With the split in the Liberal Party over the Home Rule question, he became a Liberal-Unionist, and after being made a Peer he sat with the Unionists in the House of Lords. Lord Heneage was a keen sportsman, and had owned some good racehorses. He was, too, an enthusiastic follower of hounds, and had held office for many years as Chairman of the Southwold Hunt. He had also done good work in connection with the Territorial Force.'
