Colonel Wildman
(1794-1877)

Volume 1, page 88, sitting number 554.

[The sitter is identified as 'Colonel Wildman' the Silvy daybooks and also on the album page. The album was compiled by Augustus Gough-Calthorpe, later 6th Baron Calthorpe.]

This is probably Colonel John Wildman who died on 5 December 1877, at the age of 84. According to his obituary in The Times, he was a veteran of the Peninsular War and of Waterloo, and for many years was Equerry to the His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex, fourth son of George III. The article states that he was the owner of Newstead Abbey, but in fact the house was purchased from Byron in 1817 by Colonel Thomas Wildman, who died in 1859. At his death, it was sold to the African explorer William Frederick Webb.
