(1842-1930)
26 January 1863

Volume 10, page 42, sitting number 12,535.

[This was the sitter's second visit to Silvy's studio. An earlier portrait of her by Silvy appears on page 30 of this section.]

Lady Beatrix Jane Craven was born on 8 August 1844, the fourth daughter of William Craven, 2nd Earl of Craven, and his wife Lady Emily Mary née Grimston. On 16 May 1865 she married George Henry Cadogan, the eldest son of the 4th Earl of Cadogan. The marriage produced nine children. Her husband succeeded his father on 8 June 1873 and Lady Beatrix became Countess Cadogan.

She died on 9 February 1907, aged 62, at Culford Hall in Suffolk. 'Countess Cadogan, who has been ill for some time, was taken suddenly worse on Saturday afternoon, and expired at Culfofrd Hall, Bury St Edmunds. Lady Cadogan had been suffering from influenza nearly six weeks. Her death on Saturday followed a sudden relapse' (Western Times, 11 February 1907).

According to the Henley & South Oxford Standard (15 February 1907), Lady Cadogan 'was one of the most distinguished hostesses, her reign at Dublin, when her husband was Lord-Lieutenant, being notably magnificent. Her ladyship enjoyed the friendship of Queen Victoria and the present King and Queen. Her interest in charities was widespread, and she was a splendid horsewoman.'
